For a first Seoul trip built around palaces, markets and shopping, start by comparing hotels near Myeongdong, Euljiro 1-ga or Anguk. Choose Hongdae if you want to spend several evenings there. For repeated COEX visits, look around Samseong or Bongeunsa rather than searching the whole of Gangnam.
These are starting points, not a ranking. The useful comparison is between two actual hotel addresses: the station you will use, the walk from its exit, and the journeys you will repeat. A hotel described as “in Myeongdong” can put you on a different subway line from another hotel using the same area name.
Narrow the map before comparing rooms

Save the places you are committed to visiting before you book. Include the places where you expect to finish the evening. A neighborhood you will visit once should not automatically decide where you sleep for five nights.
Myeongdong has two useful station anchors
Myeongdong Station (명동역) is on Line 4. Euljiro 1-ga Station (을지로입구역) is on Line 2. Both can serve a stay in the Myeongdong area, but they are not interchangeable when you plan your daily route.
For each hotel, check the walking route to both stations. A room marketed as “Myeongdong” may be more convenient for Euljiro 1-ga. If most of your saved destinations are on Line 2, that can be a reason to choose it; if your journeys work better from Line 4, check the Myeongdong Station side first.
The busy shopping streets are useful when you want food and shops close by. They also mean that a taxi drop-off, pedestrian access and the room’s exposure to street noise deserve a closer look. Ask about the actual entrance, especially if you will arrive late with luggage. Do not assume that the nearest point on a booking-site map is where a taxi can stop.
Hongdae works best when you want to return there at night
Search for Hongik University Station (홍대입구역), the station name used for Hongdae. Visit Seoul lists Line 2, the Airport Railroad and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line at this station. The airport connection is useful, but the walk from the correct platform to your hotel still belongs in your arrival plan.
The Gyeongui Line Forest Park and Yeonnam side can be approached from Exit 3. Use that as a map reference when comparing it with hotels on the university and shopping side. “Near Hongdae” covers more than one pocket of streets.
Choose this base when cafés, music, shopping or evenings around Hongdae are a repeated part of the trip. If you only want one afternoon there, a central sightseeing base may suit the rest of your days better. For light sleepers, check recent reviews of the exact property for bar noise and soundproofing; the neighborhood name cannot tell you whether a particular room will be quiet.
Anguk and Jongno need an address check, especially for a hanok stay
Anguk (안국역) is a useful starting point for a trip focused on palaces, Bukchon and Insadong. “Jongno” is a wider area, so compare the hotel’s route from its actual nearest station rather than treating every Jongno address as the same location.
For a small guesthouse or hanok, look beyond the room photos. Confirm whether the bathroom is private, whether the bedding is a bed or floor bedding, and whether there are steps between the street and your room. If you use a wheelchair or have difficulty carrying luggage, ask for the full step-free route; an elevator somewhere in the building does not answer that question.
A taxi may help with a long station walk, but it does not guarantee access to an alley entrance. Ask the property for its Korean address and the nearest practical drop-off point. Keep both available offline for arrival.
Seoul Station is a choice for a specific travel day
A nearby hotel can simplify an early departure or a short stop between cities. Before booking, read the departure station on your actual train ticket. Do not assume that every high-speed journey starts at Seoul Station; our KTX booking guide explains how to choose the station.
Next, identify the entrance you need and trace the walk from the hotel. “Five minutes from Seoul Station” can refer to the edge of a large station complex, not the platform or airport-train gates. If only one night is tied to an early train, compare the benefit of moving hotels with the packing, checkout and luggage storage that the move creates.
For COEX, search Samseong and Bongeunsa
Gangnam is too broad a hotel search if you have a specific appointment or event. For COEX, the useful station anchors are Samseong (삼성역), Line 2, and Bongeunsa (봉은사역), Line 9. Visit Seoul lists the mall connections at Samseong Exits 5 or 6 and Bongeunsa Exit 7.
Use those stations to narrow the map, then check the entrance of the venue you will actually use. Gangnam Station is a different location. A hotel near it can be a good choice for an appointment there, but the word “Gangnam” in a hotel listing does not mean that COEX is outside the door.
If your plans repeatedly take you to southern Seoul, staying nearby can reduce unnecessary crossings of the city. If most days are palaces, Myeongdong and Hongdae, compare those journeys before paying for a southern base.
Seongsu and Seoul Forest are separate search points
For several days of cafés, design shops and pop-ups, consider a base near your saved addresses in Seongsu. Visit Seoul’s area guide uses Seongsu Station (성수역) on Line 2 for several shops and Seoul Forest Station (서울숲역) on the Suin–Bundang Line for D Museum. Check which station serves your hotel instead of relying on the broad district label.
For one Seongsu outing during an otherwise central-Seoul trip, treat it as a day destination first. You do not need to sleep beside every neighborhood you want to explore.
Compare the full journey, including the final walk
Shortlist two hotels and test the same three journeys from each address: your first sightseeing stop, a place you will return from at night, and the airport or rail station on departure day. Use the dates and times that resemble your trip. Record the transfers and walking sections as well as the total journey time.
- Start at the hotel entrance. A station-to-station estimate leaves out the walk, road crossings and time inside the station.
- Check the exit. The shortest walking route and the route with an elevator may be different. Ask the hotel which route suits your luggage or mobility needs.
- Compare repeated trips. A slightly easier airport transfer may not compensate for an inconvenient route on every sightseeing day.
- Check your arrival plan. For a late flight, allow for immigration and baggage collection before you reach transport. Use the late-night arrival guide and confirm the property’s late check-in procedure.
- Read reviews for a specific problem. Search recent comments for stairs, elevator access, road noise and check-in difficulties. Match them to your needs rather than relying only on the average rating.
A message to send before booking
If the listing is unclear, ask the property directly. Replace the brackets with your plans and keep the reply with your reservation:
I expect to arrive at the property around [time] with [number] suitcases. Which station exit is easiest with luggage, and are there stairs between the street and my room? Can a taxi stop at the entrance? Please send the Korean address and confirm how late check-in works if my flight is delayed.
If step-free access is essential, add: “I need a route without steps from the drop-off point to the room and bathroom. Can you confirm that route?” A clear answer about the exact building is more useful than choosing a supposedly convenient neighborhood and hoping the final walk will work.
